The storm lay centered over central Philippines on Tuesday morning with maximum sustained winds of 149 kph, moving west at about 25 kph, according to Vietnam's National Center for Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting.

By 1 a.m. on Wednesday, the storm's center is forecast to be over western central Philippines with winds of 118–149 kph, turning west-northwest at 20–25 kph. It is expected to enter the East Sea, or South China Sea, later that morning and strengthen due to warm sea temperatures.

As it approaches central Vietnam, Kalmaegi will intensify further. By 1 a.m. Thursday, it is projected to lie about 630 km off the coast of Gia Lai Province, reaching winds of 150–166 kph.

The storm is expected to continue moving toward land with little weakening. By 1 a.m. Friday, it will be over coastal waters from Quang Ngai to Dak Lak, with maximum sustained winds of 134–149 kph.

Japan Meteorological Agency reported current winds of 144 kph, which are expected to weaken to 126 kph over the Philippines, then strengthen again to 144 kph over the central East Sea. The Hong Kong Observatory forecasts landfall in Gia Lai with winds around 155 kph.

Due to the storm's influence, from Wednesday to Thursday, the central East Sea—including the Truong Sa (Spratly) Islands and offshore areas from Da Nang to Khanh Hoa (home to Nha Trang)—is expected to experience strong winds of 118–166 kph and waves of 8–10 m. All vessels and structures in these areas will be severely affected.

The Vietnam Meteorological and Hydrological Administration under the Ministry of Agriculture and Environment said Kalmaegi is moving quickly. Once it enters the East Sea, emergency storm updates will be issued every three hours, with fast alerts every hour.

The agency warned the storm could trigger thunderstorms and tornado-like whirlwinds ahead of its arrival, along with widespread heavy rain from Thursday night through Sunday across central provinces from Quang Tri to Dak Lak.

The storm is forecast to make landfall between Da Nang and Khanh Hoa around late Thursday or early Friday, potentially causing new flooding along rivers from Quang Tri to Khanh Hoa.

"There remains uncertainty regarding the storm's track, intensity, movement direction, rainfall center, and total rainfall in the coming days," the administration noted.

Thunderstorms and whirlwinds are common with strong typhoons, causing severe damage due to their unpredictability and intensity, often occurring hundreds of kilometers from the storm's center.

In September, when Typhoon Bualoi struck Nghe An and Ha Tinh, distant provinces such as Ninh Binh, Hung Yen, Hai Phong, Quang Ninh, and Hue—200–300 km away—recorded at least 10 tornadoes that killed nine people and injured 18.

Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh on Monday signed an urgent directive requesting provinces from Ha Tinh to Quang Ngai to quickly address flood damage. The National Committee for Civil Defense also urged localities to closely monitor the storm and prepare response plans for potential landfall and post-storm flooding.

Since the start of the year, Vietnam has experienced 12 storms and five tropical depressions. Among them, storms Wutip, Wipha, Kajiki, Nongfa, Ragasa, Bualoi, Matmo, and Fengshen directly impacted or caused major floods in northern and central regions.

Central Vietnam including Hue and Da Nang is still struggling with widespread flooding that has lasted for around 10 days following torrential rain. The flooding has left 38 people dead, six missing, with significant material losses yet to be fully assessed.
