Vietnam has plenty of opportunity for exporting agricultural goods to key markets
In 2024, the three largest export markets for Vietnamese agricultural, forestry, and fishery products continue to be the US, China, and Japan. The export prospects to these countries remain very promising for 2025.
According to the Institute of Policy and Strategy for Agriculture and Rural Development, the US market’s seafood demand, especially for shrimp and shark catfish, is continuing to grow.

The US wood and wood products market is estimated to reach 125.6 billion USD in 2024, with an expected compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 1.11% during the 2024-2029 period. Additionally, the US is also a major consumer market for products like coffee, cashew nuts, and pepper.
Regarding the Chinese market, Vietnam’s agricultural exports to the world’s second largest economy recorded significant progress in 2024, with both growth in value and a greater market reach.
Vietnamese agricultural products have appeared in major supermarket chains in provinces deep within China’s interior, such as Shandong and Hunan.
In 2024, Vietnam signed additional protocols with China, opening the market for new products such as frozen durian, fresh coconut, and farmed crocodile.
Vietnamese agricultural products made their first appearance on Chinese e-commerce platforms and social media such as TikTok, Kuaishou, Taobao, JD.com, and Xiaohongshu.
Vietnamese agricultural goods have many advantages with regards to the Chinese market such as the close proximity between the two countries and China’s strong demand for agricultural products, with fruit-vegetables and seafood expected to increase by 6.64% and 7.56% per year respectively during 2024-2029 period.
In addition, China’s demand for imported rubber and cassava remains high due to limited domestic supply. These are favourable conditions for Vietnam’s exports in 2025.
For the Japanese market, during 2024, Vietnam and Japan continued to strengthen cooperation in agriculture, forestry and fisheries. However, Vietnamese agricultural products currently account for a small proportion of Japan’s total import value, suggesting significant room and opportunities for growth.
To boost exports to Japan, Vietnamese businesses should note that Japanese consumers prefer organic and safe products that meet sustainability standards.
Agricultural products with high consumption and import demand in Japan include seafood (shrimp), wood and wood products (raw wood, wood chips, pellets), and fruit and vegetables (frozen vegetables and fruits, processed fruits, and nuts).
Vietnam’s agro-forestry-fisheries exports are projected to reach over 62 billion USD in 2024, and continue to grow next year, heard at a conference in Ho Chi Minh City on December 16.
Vietnam’s garment-textile export value is expected to reach 44 billion USD in 2024, marking an 11.26% increase from 2023, according to the Vietnam Textile and Apparel Association (VITAS).
Seven commodities of Vietnam posted an export value of over 10 billion USD in the first 11 months of this year, accounting for over 66.5% of the country's total export turnover.
