New Xuong Giang bridge unit opens to technical traffic on Hanoi–Bac Giang expressway
BAC NINH - New Xuong Giang bridge unit opened to technical traffic on Hanoi–Bac Giang expressway on December 19, marking a key step in easing congestion and boosting logistics capacity in Bac Ninh province.
The Railway Project Management Board under the Ministry of Construction held a technical opening ceremony for the new Xuong Giang bridge unit and its approach roads spanning the Thuong River, after nearly a year of construction. The project is among works launched to mark the 14th National Party Congress.

Construction began in February 2025 with total investment of more than 170 billion VND (about 7 million USD), funded by the state budget. The project stretches nearly 1 km, including a 301-metre bridge and approach roads, running from kilometre 117+440 to around kilometre 118+400 within Bac Giang ward, Bac Ninh province.
Designed as a single new bridge unit, the structure is 16.5 metres wide with three motor vehicle lanes. The approach roads on both sides are built to a 33-metre-wide roadbed with four motor vehicle lanes. The works form part of a broader programme to upgrade and expand selected bridges and tunnels along National Highway 1 in several provinces.
Mai Xuan Tan, director overseeing several bridge and tunnel projects on National Highway 1, said contractors were instructed to work in three shifts and four teams, including on weekends and holidays, to accelerate progress. As a result, the bridge unit reached technical opening ahead of schedule.
Once fully operational, the new Xuong Giang bridge unit is expected to create a new transport axis supporting urban and industrial development and to enhance Bac Ninh’s logistics capacity during 2025–2035. The additional unit doubles traffic capacity across the river, easing pressure on the existing bridge.
Authorities said the project would improve travel convenience and safety, shorten travel times between the urban centre and industrial parks, facilitate the movement of goods and help attract investment into the province’s industrial zones and clusters.
