A ceremony took place in Gia Lai province on December 23 to present post-disaster recovery aid from the US Government to residents in several central provinces of Vietnam.

The event was jointly organised by the Vietnam Disaster and Dike Management Authority under the Ministry of Agriculture and Environment, the US Consulate General in Ho Chi Minh City, and Catholic Relief Services (CRS) in Vietnam.

In response to heavy losses caused by recent natural disasters, the US Government approved an emergency aid package worth 1.25 million USD (around 32 billion VND), channelled through CRS in Vietnam, to support affected localities, including Quang Ngai, Gia Lai and Dak Lak.

Consul General Melissa Anne Brown presented the aid to Nguyen Van Tien, deputy director of the authority. At the ceremony, Gia Lai province received support valued at approximately 4.27 billion VND.

Addressing the event, Tien expressed sincere appreciation to the US Government and people, as well as CRS, for their timely and practical support, noting that the assistance would help disaster-hit communities overcome difficulties and stabilise their livelihoods.

Following the ceremony, the working delegation and local leaders visited beneficiaries, offered encouragement, and inspected the implementation of the aid programme in Tuy Phuoc Dong commune, Gia Lai province.

Central, south-central floods cause nearly 500 million USD in losses

Flooding has damaged 82,147 ha of rice and seasonal crops, 117,067 ha of perennial crops, killed or swept away more than 3.3 million livestock and poultry, and affected 1,157 ha of aquaculture. Floods and landslides have left 102 people dead, 11 missing, 221 homes destroyed and 933 others damaged.

As road transport paralysed in many areas, railway authorities have provided 9,400 complimentary main meals and 6,100 supplementary meals to stranded passengers.

 

1.1 trillion VND in emergency aid allocated to four flood-hit provinces

Under the decision, Khanh Hoa will receive 150 billion VND, Lam Dong 300 billion VND, Gia Lai 150 billion VND, and Dak Lak 500 billion VND, in line with the proposal submitted by the Ministry of Finance.

Standing Deputy Prime Minister Nguyen Hoa Binh presented gifts to residents evacuated from heavily flooded areas in Dong Hoa, encouraging them to overcome current difficulties to quickly stabilise their lives after the floods.

Chairing an an emergency online meeting with representatives of ministries, agencies and localities on responses to heavy rains, floods, and other natural disasters in several central provinces while in Algeria, the leader urged localities to review and assess conditions, especially in submerged and cut-off areas, to plan timely support.

 

Nearly 1.39 trillion VND registered as relief aid for flood victims via central relief committee

The VFF Committees at all levels have so far mobilised more than 2.6 trillion VND to support communities affected by consecutive storms and floods.
